Estimation before measuring
⚠️ Language Guidance
✅ SAY:
"This is longer than that"
"It is 5 pencils long"
"Use the same unit"
"Place them end-to-end"
❌ AVOID (for now):
Centimeters or meters
Rulers or tape measures
Exact numeric comparisons across units
🏠 Home Activity
Let children measure real objects! Use handspans to measure the table, footsteps to measure the room. Ask: "How many handspans?" This builds understanding before formal units.
💡 Key Insight
Children must understand WHY we use the same unit. If you measure with pencils, then switch to blocks, the number changes! This teaches scientific discipline early.

Design Note: This chapter uses ONLY non-standard units. No rulers, no cm/m. The goal is understanding what measurement means before learning formal units.
